Finland Higher Education Explorer: Programmes and Student Statistics in One View

A free, searchable view of Finnish higher education: programmes from Opintopolku and official Statistics Finland data for 2021–2025, by field, institution type, level, city and language.

Finland Higher Education Explorer: Programmes and Student Statistics in One View

The Finland Higher Education Explorer is a free, searchable view of Finnish higher education. It brings programmes, institutions and official student statistics into one place, so universities and universities of applied sciences can be inspected, filtered and compared without jumping between sources.

Finland's higher-education system is often described through rankings, reputation and individual institutions. This project approaches it from a different direction: by combining programme-level information from Opintopolku / Konfo with official data from Statistics Finland. The aim is to make the structure of Finnish higher education easier to inspect, compare and understand.

What You Can Explore

The programme inventory covers publicly available information: programme names, institutions, locations, degree levels, teaching languages and announced study places. You can filter it by:

  • Field of education
  • Institution type (university or university of applied sciences)
  • Education level (Bachelor, Master, Doctoral)
  • City
  • Institution
  • Teaching language, for example English-taught programmes

The statistical side covers 2021–2025: new students, qualifications awarded, annual student counts, gender distribution and nationality-based comparisons. Figures are shown by educational field, institution type and education level whenever the official data allows. You can compare Finland and non-Finland backgrounds and look at the most common non-Finland countries in the available data. These comparisons show patterns in the data. They make no assumptions about individuals.

Who It Is For

Prospective and international students looking for programmes in Finland, researchers and journalists who need a quick view of the sector, and anyone in education who wants to see how fields, institutions and student numbers relate. If you have ever asked "which English-taught Master's programmes exist in Finland, and where?", this is built for that kind of question.

Reading the Numbers Correctly

A data explorer should not only display numbers. It should also show what those numbers represent. The project makes a clear distinction between different figures:

  • New students are students entering higher education during a given year.
  • Qualifications are awards recorded during that year. They are not unique people.
  • Annual student counts are yearly observations. They must not be added together as a unique five-year population.

One example is doctoral education in engineering, manufacturing and construction. At the time of writing, the programme inventory contains six doctoral programme offerings from two institutions. These are implementation records rather than six necessarily unique programme names: one Tampere programme appears in two separate offering records, while some Aalto programmes are classified under the engineering field through the official field mapping.

Not a Ranking

The Explorer is an exploratory research tool. It does not claim to measure institutional quality. It provides a transparent way to examine programme availability, educational fields, student flows and changes over time using official public sources. It is an independent project and is not affiliated with Opintopolku, Konfo or Statistics Finland. For application decisions, always check the official programme page.

Sources and Method

  • Opintopolku / Konfo programme data
  • Statistics Finland PxWeb tables
  • Programme and institution records available at the time of the latest inventory update

Programme records may represent separate implementation or application offerings. Statistical totals may include overlapping observations across years, particularly when students remain enrolled for multiple years or when qualifications are recorded separately from student counts. Figures should be interpreted according to their definition rather than combined mechanically. The data will continue to be reviewed and updated as new programme information and statistical releases become available.
